DaVinci Resolve System Requirements (2026)

These are the launch floors — confirmed against the Resolve 21.0.4 readme dated August 4, 2026. They answer one question: will the software install and open. They say nothing about whether your timeline will play.

What decides performance — and therefore which component becomes your bottleneck — is not the minimum spec. It's the combination of:
- Source codec and resolution
- Frame rate and simultaneous streams
- Complexity of Color page nodes
- Fusion page processing load
- AI tools in use (noise reduction, Magic Mask)
- Cache format and delivery settings

Part 4 — GPU in Resolve

The VRAM cliff
VRAM exhaustion in Resolve causes abrupt failure — stuttering or freezes — not gradual degradation. This is the most important hardware characteristic to understand. A timeline that plays back at 7.8 GB can become unwatchable the moment it crosses 8 GB.

GPU type guidance
- NVIDIA CUDA cards: preferred for Resolve. CUDA 12.8 required. Studio Driver 570.65 or newer — not Game Ready.
- AMD: supported via OpenCL 1.2. Good performance at equivalent VRAM tiers.
- Gaming GPUs: perform well until VRAM limits are reached. The boundary is capacity, not architecture.
- Integrated graphics: unsuitable beyond basic 1080p editing. Unstable for serious work.
Part 5 — The Free vs Studio Hardware Gate
A high-end GPU delivers limited benefit in the free edition of Resolve without the Studio license. These features require Studio:
- Single GPU only
- No GPU-accelerated H.264/HEVC encode/decode
- No noise reduction (GPU feature)
- Limited AI tools
- No multi-GPU benefit
- Up to 8 GPUs (peaks at 3–4)
- GPU-accelerated H.264 and HEVC encode/decode

Storage

- NVMe SSD for OS, cache, and active projects: significantly improves responsiveness and playback. Miracamp and CoreMicro both flag this as essential.
- Dedicated cache drive: Skorppio recommends a separate NVMe drive for Resolve's cache at 4K production tier. Resolve's cache generation creates sustained write pressure — a shared OS drive slows both.
- Three-drive setup: confirmed as broadly sound by the Blackmagic forum — OS drive, media drive, cache/project drive. Reduces read/write contention significantly.
- HDD for media storage: acceptable for archived footage. Not for active project media during editing.
